Cataract - Phacoemulsification of lens with implant - unilateral

What is cataract?

In the eye ball there exists a natural, congenital lens from birth and the function of this lens is to focus the images on the retina. If the clarity of the lens is altered, this blurred lens, is also known as a cataract, would not be able to focus a clear view on the retina.

How is cataract treated?

The only way to treat cataract is surgery. The eye is penetrated with the aid of using tiny needle holes and the cloudy lens is extracted from the eye via these needle holes during the surgery. Several specific appliances are used to apply ultrasonic energy to the cataract to emulsify it into small pieces and suck it outside the eye. Afterwards, the artificial lens is replaced by the natural lens by implanting the artificial lens into the eye through the same needle holes. These pinholes are self-sealing and close by themselves.

Do I need anesthesia for cataract surgery?

General anesthesia is not always necessary for cataract surgery. We drop eye drops on the eye to numb it and this gives enough anesthesia for surgery. But sometimes we use general anesthesia if the patient needs to sleep during the operation.

How long does cataract surgery take?

It takes 10 to 15 minutes roughly but you spend around 30 minutes in the operating room and you might need 3 hours at the hospital for preliminaries and examinations such as, blood tests . Usually you can leave the hospital as soon as the surgery finishes.

What kind of lenses are available?

We use the best lenses complying with US, UK and EU standarts and regulations. In general the lenses are either of the two types monofocal or multifocal. Both lenses are more adveantegous in different aspects. You can decide the right lens type with your eye surgeon.

Do I need glasses after cataract surgery?

Before the operation we make very precise measurements and calculations to decide the power of the lens to be implanted in your eye so that you don’t need glasses after the operation. But because the eyeball is made of flesh not a solid material how precise we measure you might sometimes need glasses.

Are there any risks and complications?

Like any surgery cataract surgery also has some risks and complications but honestly they are very rare. It is one of the safest surgeries. To minimise them we use the most sophisticated and upto date equipments and surgical materials, well trained and experienced surgical team and appropriate pre and postoperative evaluation.

What are the advantages of phacoemulsification?

No hospitalization – Walk in, Walk out surgery.

How many days rest is needed after cataract surgery?

Most people are able to return to work or their normal routine in 1 to 3 days.

Cautıons

*Avoid heavy lifting, exercise, and other strenuous activities. *Avoid direct water contact to the eye ball first few days after surgery. *Avoid dust completely, wear protective eyewear if you’re around it. *You should wear sunglasses outside in order to protect your eyes from UV damage. *Never rub your eye. It may feel itchy or irritated but rubbing it will make it worse. Rubbing your eyes can cause serious complications.

Flying after cataract surgery is generally considered safe. However, it is very important to maintain your post-op visits as recommended by your doctor.
